Here’s a few excerpts from what might be my last VJ gig in the Kamloops area for some time as I’m moving to Vancouver at the end of the month. Anyway, it came together last minute as it was supposed to be an outdoor party, but got changed cause of rain. It turned out to be a nice, little party – cozy, kind of a mini-rave. Thanks to DJ Herbal Vegas and his mates, who were involved in putting the party together.
I came up with a weird screen set-up, using both a large blank, paint canvas next to an extended old-school home-movie type screen. Also had an extra, weak projector, projecting onto a white garage door elsewhere in the room. I couldn’t see the DJs from where I was VJing from, and don’t think I ever did see a VJ list – but I think at least part of the music you’ll hear in this video excerpt came during the set of DJ Kudos.
I’m really enjoying using the Grand VJ software (the new software by the makers of Arkaos). Really like how I can use it to layer effects, triggering the effects from a MIDI keyboard. It seems like some people like the idea of a VJ who creates all their own images – that’s cool for sure, but when I VJ I usually do it for five or six hours, and see that as a good time to jam with other people’s images or just simply experiment. In this clip, you’ll see some BBC Planet Earth lizard footage mixed up with some visual generators, and also from a Doves’ video for “Sky Starts Falling” (directed by Ruben Sutherland), and also a bit of footage from the French nature documentary Microcosmos.

This is footage from the birthday party of Vaughn Warren, a Kamloops-area artist, who organized the warehouse parties (amongst tonnes of other stuff) which I VJed at a few years back. He gave me the call to VJ again. Soul Patch, a legendary Kamloops live act, played a reunion show. I love it when I have the chance to VJ for a live act. My VJ booth was located conveniently above the stage, and I pointed my camera at the stage, while effecting it and other footage through my VJ mixer and setup. I loved how it came together at times. I took a few excerpts and taped them together to make this video. In all the multitasking I was doing, I didn’t get around to changing the tape in the camera, so no other footage from the night.
It was an awesome party. Happy birthday, Vaughn!

Love this new GrandVJ software. I connected in my video camera through Firewire, and then effected the signal. GrandVJ lets you apply several effects at once, which can be triggered from a MIDI keyboard, so it really becomes an FX-keyboard. I would film things around the room or right off my portable DVD player screen and then effect it. Since Elftrance was operating the main visuals for the majority of the night, I could take some time and line up a cool looking effect, and then have him fade the VJ mixer over to what I was doing. I loved the idea that I was creating something out of nothing, in that I didn’t even load any clips into my software, but could simply play off elements in the room.
We had a lot of equipment and software between us. He had two laptops running Resolume and a top-end Edirol mixer, while I had my usual set up of Korg Kaoss Entrancer, Korg Krossfour, portable DVD player, camera feed, and also the new Grand VJ software.
Lots of screens. Lots of fun.
Was a lot of fun.

This is a visual remix of the Burning Man show presented by Vinny Vancesco and the Scarecrew at Fandango’s 2009 Halloween party. I mixed in video camera footage of the fire dancing and burning of the scarecrow with some of the visuals I used in that night’s VJ sets.

These are some excerpts from the Skir party at the warehouse – March 29th, 2008. A month earlier I had VJed at the Tempest party, for which I’d prepared a bunch of bad weather visuals, so with the weather warming up, I thought I’d prepare with a spring theme for my visuals for this party. I dug up all the flowery footage I could from times when I was in Okinawa or Seoul, and also downloaded a bunch of spring-related clips at animationfactory.com
Again, I was using the Arkaos VJ software with the Kaoss Krossfour mixer and Korg Kaoss Entrancer video effector. I had a lot of fun at this party, filming the crowd and mixing in that footage. Jump ahead to about 1:58 to see what I’m talking about.
The setup was great again, with screens everywhere. The organizers made a giant butterfly hung from the ceiling – but somehow I didn’t get that on my video tape.
Anyway, the party got shut down around 4 AM after a bit of a disturbance.
This party was in a warehouse in the Mount Paul industrial park. Thanks to Vinny Franchesco for the chance to VJ, Graham (How Sound) for the sound, Kyle for the lights, and all the DJs: Smurf Logic, Sean Gunn, Danger Dan, and there were others but not listed on the flyer (as I’m writing this well after the fact, I can’t recall who was there).

This video presents some excerpts from the Tempest party at the warehouse – March 1st, 2008. I just taped together a bunch of 10-15 second clips in an attempt to leave behind a document from the night. It was freezing cold that night. In the last minute of this clip, I added in the footage of a guy named Ryan doing some wicked fire spinning outside. In the background, you might be able to see the white glow of Mount Paul.
The set-up was great again. There were four big screens – two showing my visuals, and two showing automatic visualizer content. Also, take note of the awesome mandala behind the stage.

By the way, since this party had a Tempest theme, I tried to track down a bunch of stormy visuals: lots of lightning, flooded streets, blizzard scenes, and trees being blown over.
Again, I used the Arkaos VJ software, in conjunction with the Korg Krossfour mixer and the Kaoss Entrancer video effector.

Some of my visuals appear in this clip, but I want to mention that some of the visuals seen in the background of this particular sequence come from some automatically generated visualization software that the lights guy Kyle set up that night – I found myself switching back and forth to that, just cause my own stuff is not as timed with the music and a bit thin at this point to make it through 6-7 hours straight.

At about 2 minutes into this clip, I show my VJ set-up. I was nicely tucked away (but a little lonely) in the back corner, but totally stoked about the two large screens stage left and right, and also the projection on the giant cardboard skull. The room was really well-decorated. Check out the awesome moon behind the stage.

By the way, my VJ footage came from a mixture of animated halloween clipart, stock content in Motion, and a bunch of jack-o-lantern images I brazenly stole from Flickr.

Strobing photos from the Bangkok night set to a dub beat. Seafran had taken these photos in Bangkok and thought they’d be good for a visual remix. He provided the looping music track for this, too. I mixed up the photos in the Arkaos VJ software and did some after-work in Motion.

Video for Jet Echo’s “Drift Speaking.” I’d had footage of them playing different venues in Seoul, and they went on a tour of Japan, China, and Korea. That inspired me to dig up some of my Japan footage, and imagine Northeast Asia at night, while Jet Echo played live somewhere.

This video was done simply as an experiment in syncing together a music keyboard powered by the Logic music software with my Arkaos VJ software. I could load the still images into Arkaos, and then use a midi keyboard to simultaneously trigger the images as well as music notes. Someone complimented me on the music, which is funny, because I essentially just banged away at the piano keys at random since I don’t know how to play.
I have taken literally thousands of pictures along the Han River of Seoul in the past year – granted many of the photos are similar one to the other. I don’t know yet what I’ll do with all these photos, but for sure something more than this eventually.
