This was filmed in 1999 and edited in the early 2000s. I’d written a film script for a movie to take place in Vancouver. A lot of the abandoned material of the script made it into this. The film is basically location shooting from bus windows, train windows, apartment balconies, etc … with a commentary that drifts between jilted lover and detached urban critic.
I’d still like to do a shorter version (this one is 16 minutes), but not sure when/if I’ll ever get around to it.

soundtrack to departure
I sold and gave away a pile of my CDs and records lately. As I was selling them to some friends in my living room, I’d copy a song from each one. I played this mix in a friends’ car en route to the Vancouver airport, where I’d be leaving on a flight to Toronto. I was leaving from the domestic terminal, but I filmed it like I was leaving from international, cause I wanted to use the scene for my film Vancouver Slow Chase.
The songs heard are Geto Boys’ “Mind Playing Tricks On Me,” a Lee Perry production “Woman’s Dub,” the Beatles’ “Baby It’s You” and Coco & the Bean’s “Western Ways.”
On the tape, I said I might be playing this back in Japan, as if I already knew I’d be going there for sure, and that that’s where I’d be doing the editing.
one last look from the window
a scan with my camera of the Vancouver apartment I’ve been sharing, on the eve of my departure from Vancouver, April 1999. The Tindersticks’ “Tiny Tears” plays in the background. I’ve had to give away so many of my belongings – my CDs, my stereo, my computer, books … much more stuff I’ve had to leave behind than I can take with me.
I would later use this scene in my film Vancouver Slow Chase.
